Event Description |
The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit’s surveillance and monitoring system has identified an increase in opioid-related Emergency Department (ED) visits and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) calls inclusively between July 6th and July 13th of 2021. Over this consecutive seven day period, it has been identified that there were twenty-six (26) opioid-related ED visits, eighteen (18) of which were overdoses (of which 17 involved fentanyl). Of the remaining eight (8) non-overdose opioid-related ED visits, all involved fentanyl. Additionally, we had eight (8) non-overdose methamphetamine ED visits, as well. Historically our numbers for this week (Week 27) has been historically low and the numbers reported by the hospitals exceed our expected thresholds Partners involved in the WECOSS, including the WECHU, Windsor Regional Hospital, Essex Windsor-EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare, and Police Services, continue to monitor this increase and are working to understand more about these reported cases. |
