High Rates of Drug-Related Overdoses – April 14, 2021

Event description

The Windsor-Essex CountHiy Health Unit’s surveillance and monitoring system has identified an increase in drug-related overdoses between April 5th through April 11th, 2021. There were 10 opioid-related emergency department visits during this time (6 overdoses and 4 non-overdoses). Five of the 6 overdoses involved fentanyl, while all of the non-overdoses involved fentanyl. Additionally, we received 5 EMS notifications yesterday alone (April 13). Based on our comparisons to previous years for this week, these numbers are extremely high and warrant a community alert.

Partners involved in the WECOSS including WECHU, Windsor Regional Hospital, Essex Windsor-EMS, Erie Shores Healthcare, and Police Services continue to monitor this increase and are working to understand more about these reported cases.
